The Gatekeepers of our technology
The Linux Community is having an on-again off-again love affair with Dell. It's been a rocky affair since Dell decided it would bump the positive side of their ledger by offering the Linux Operating System on their products. There have been some embarrassing public displays of affection and there have been equally public spats, with a few pots and pans thrown...

Ubuntu's Ubiquity Gains Home Encryption Support
Ubuntu 7.10 had introduced support for install-time encryption to provide a fully encrypted LVM. However, this feature was only available through Ubuntu's alternate CD installer and not Ubiquity, Ubuntu's popular LiveCD installer. We had hoped the disk encryption support would be added in Ubuntu 8.04 and then later Ubuntu 8.10, but that never occurred.

Making KDE's Konqueror Obey You
I am a proud KDE-lover, and I think Konqueror is the best file manager there is. It's a pretty good Web browser too, though it tends to gag on certain script-heavy, poorly-scripted sites. But that seems a rational response--spit 'em out and move on.

First, Linux is open-source, so it would be extremely hard to inject a backdoor in to its code. Second, since Linux is far less commonly used than, say, Windows, a governmental organization is far less likely to target it.

All That Matters for Now is Out-of-the-Box Experience
I find Dell's half-hearted commitment to Linux as frustrating as everyone else.
