It's good to see news about continuing adoption of open source software in schools around the world. I've written before about how doable it would be for many American schools to reduce costs, increase efficiency and arm kids with Linux notebooks through open source adoption.

One of the biggest gripes the FOSS community has with respect to Microsoft's business tactics is that its longstanding exclusionary agreements with hardware vendors has stifled genuine competition. This is the very issue of one of two claims Novell will be allowed to press against Microsoft in their anti-trust lawsuit.

Obviously, there is money to be saved by using open source software in schools. Even merely substituting OpenOffice of Microsoft Office on student computers can save thousands in licensing costs

Becta has recently shown that it is unafraid of speaking out on behalf of schools. Unhappy with the value for money schools were getting regarding software licencing they first referred Microsoft to the government’s Office of Fair Trading then sent shock waves through schools when it issued its advice not to upgrade to Windows Vista or Office 2007.

VC funding levels rose again in the second quarter compared to last year, up just under 14% to $115.5m, compared to $101.5m in 2Q07. Given the overwhelming level of investment in open source vendors seen in the first quarter, it was always unlikely that level of momentum would continue into Q2.
