The idea of patents aren't bad,

The idea of patents aren't bad, the problem is the quality of the patent. In the US, there are patents that cover anti-gravity devices, time travelling machines, and perpetual motion devices! Software patents should not deserve patent protection. The length of time for each patent should be no longer than 15 years.

The government granted the inventors monopoly on a certain type of technologies. That's pure insanity for you.

They are the cause for the delay of the industrial revolution because a damn steam engine inventor spend too much time suing/leveraging his political connection instead of innovating or responding to competitions. In one case, he managed to drive an inventor to debt/penniless and delay an important improvement in the evolution of steam engines.

Food for thought: industries such as the Italian pharmaceutical industry thrive without patents, and a certain African company produced more movies than all the nations with copyright law.
