Samsung delivers phones that are based on Linux, but Samsung also engages in a Novell-like deal with Microsoft

The Linux Mobile Foundation (LiMo) got a huge boost today, when global carrier Vodafone, world's largest wireless operator (by sales), tapped U.S. software firm Azingo to develop Linux-based mobile applications. Reuters called the news "the latest sign (Vodafone) is keeping Linux operating system LiMo as one of its key choices."

Eighteen mobile handsets that support the LiMo (Linux Mobile) Foundation platform have been announced by Aplix, LG Electronics, Motorola, NEC, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Purple Labs, and Samsung. The LiMO Foundation also announced the addition of nine new members, including Access, Orange, and AMD.

Verizon last month joined the LiMo Foundation, an organization that advocates for open mobile phone handset technology using Mobile Linux. As a core member of LiMo, Verizon hopes to lower the development costs of mobile phone designs across the industry.

Vodafone's plans to distribute a phone based on the LiMo Platform spec remain on track, despite joining the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), which oversees the rival Google-sponsored Android stack, says eWEEK. Yet momentum in the Linux mobile arena may have shifted to Android, the story suggests.

Samsung announced an "open" mobile platform called "Bada," which appears to be a programmable UI layer that runs on its proprietary feature phones, although one report defines Bada as Samsung's own Linux OS. Meanwhile, a Korean analyst report claims that Samsung plans to discard Symbian and downshift Microsoft's Windows Mobile.
