After the release of the Ubuntu Multi-Touch stack called UTouch and the X.Org Gesture Extension, the rising question would be the support of everyday applications, as only a few applications in Ubuntu 10.10 will properly support UTouch. Standard applications which are non-multi-touch-aware only recognize events which come from the keyboard and the mouse like key-presses and mouse clicks.

Nokia has released Version 4.6 of its Qt cross-platform application and UI framework. Qt 4.6 includes support for the Symbian platform for the first time, and adds Windows 7, Apple Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard), and the upcoming Maemo 6 to the list of Qt-supported platforms.

Android developers looking forward to the inclusion of multi-touch support in the upcoming release of Google's open source mobile operating system, code named "Donut", will need to wait even longer. It was previously believed that Donut, which would see a final release as Android version 2.0, would include the much anticipated multi-touch gesture support.

Earlier this month Canonical introduced its own multi-touch framework for Ubuntu that is set to premiere with Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" and it's called UTouch and is joined by their own gesture/touch language. The X.Org Gesture Extension is already being re-evaluated and may in fact not be needed.

The PyMT developers have announced version 0.5 of their Python multi-touch user interface library with new touch controls, native Linux multi-touch support and improved performance

Cypress Semiconductor announced a touchscreen device driver for Android and Linux that supports Cypress' TrueTouch touchscreen controllers, complete with "all-points" multi-touch signaling support. Meanwhile, "Cyanogen" has hacked a multi-touch interface for Google's Nexus One phone, and Google is upgrading the Android-based phone's spotty 3G support, says eWEEK.

Nokia updated its Qt application framework to version 4.6 on December 1st, adding support for several operating systems — most notably its own mobile platforms: the recently open source Symbian and the Linux-based Maemo. Qt 4.6 introduces new graphics features, new input methods, and updates to the QtScript scripting engine.

Linux may soon gain "multi-touch" support similar to that found in Apple's iPhone. The MPX (multi-pointer X) project is currently developing software aimed at enabling multiple cursors and input devices on standard OSes that use the X Window System, such as Linux and BSD.
