In another sign interoperability between virtual Linux and Windows operating systems is gathering pace, Red Hat has quietly released a set of drivers to improve the performance of Windows guests hosted on Linux's Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) hypervisor.

2.6.36 offers VFS optimisations, has returned to integrating Ext3 file systems with "data=ordered" by default and can store data from shared Windows or Samba disks in local cache to improve performance. Numerous new and improved drivers enhance the kernel's storage and network hardware support

These days, most of us can use our Wi-Fi cards on Linux using native drivers. Some of us, though, are still stuck with using Windows drivers on Linux.

VirtualBox 2's guest additions provide better display drivers, mouse pointer integration, seamless windows, and more. If you're doing much work in a virtual machine you should have them installed.

Linux 2.6.33 will have new and improved drivers for Wi-Fi chips by Intel, Ralink and Realtek. Several drivers for old Wi-Fi hardware have been moved to the staging area and will probably soon be discarded. New additions include various LAN chip drivers and several improvements to the network stack.

In time for the X.Org 7.5 release (whenever that may come), David Airlie has put out new driver releases for nineteen of the X.Org video drivers. These aren't updates to the mainline ATI/AMD, Intel, or even NVIDIA drivers, but some of the drivers for less common graphics hardware.

Nvidia drivers, like it's propriety counterpart, ati, have a tendency to break. For some computer users, it breaks a lot. The open source drivers, vesa and nv, from experience, do not break on my systems.

An Israeli startup has squeezed a complete hardware firewall into a USB key. The 'Yoggie Pico' from Yoggie Systems runs Linux 2.6 along with 13 security applications on a 520MHz PXA270, an Intel processor typically used in high-end smartphones.

Novell has released version 1.0.0 of their free Radeon r5xx/r6xx AMD/ATI drivers. This is their first full release of these drivers. There is currently no 2D or 3D acceleration.

This represents the first fully-free driver based on the recently-released Radeon hardware specifications.
