OK, the day we've been waiting for: the thing that's going to actually make text banners out of all these parts!

I'm going to try an experiment: blogging a whole project for a little graphics toy I've managed to hack out. You are welcome to copy and save scripts as we go along, just read them and learn how to do it yourself, modify them to your own purposes, or just nod your head and go "Uh-huh, gawrsh, lookit the purty code boxes!" as they fly by.

Continuing in this series of slide show backgrounds, in this article I will explain the process of creating a set of desktop backgrounds that will transition like a slide-show in XFCE. Note that I am using XFCE version 4.6.0 in this tutorial. Other versions may be able to use this tip, but the screen shots may look different. See corresponding howtos for GNOME, and KDE3 also.

My recent article about transitioning slide show backgrounds in GNOME garnered quite a bit of attention, so here's my first reminder of how to do the same thing in other desktop environments. This one will show you how to create a custom slide show backgrounds in KDE3.

After publishing an article about removing backgrounds quickly in Photoshop, many have asked me how to do the same thing with the Gimp. While there is no equivalent to the Extract filter in the Gimp, you can still remove backgrounds fairly quickly. At Linux.com there is a good explanation of some techniques. Here, I will show you how to do it with the Create and edit paths tool.

While test-driving the new Gnome 2.28 desktop, I was surprised to see that among the default backgrounds, there was a "Cosmos" slide-show of several cosmic pictures of space that regularly transition on your desktop.
