As we come to the end of Akkana Peck's excellent series on mastering GRUB2, it's not clear what advantages it has over legacy GRUB, or even good old LILO. It seems it's gone backwards. In today's installment we learn how to translate some common and mysterious error messages, and how to manage a multi-boot system with GRUB2.

Starting with Ubuntu Karmic, Grub2 is used (for clean installs for now), so THIS how-to on recovering the GRUB no longer works for the new GRUB2.

But recovering GRUB2 (after breaking the GRUB2 or installing Windows - which breaks GRUB2, etc.) is just as easy. Here is what you need to do

Note: This tutorial should work for any Linux distribution which uses GRUB2, not just Ubuntu.

GRUB 2 is a new boot loader which comes with Ubuntu Karmic Koala. GRUB 2 is in charge of showing the menu that allows you to choose the operating system or Kernel version when your computer starts. This post will explain how to change the background image and colors in GRUB2.

Now you can use grub2 in Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 Etch. Grub2 supports high quality background images. Grub2 also supports booting an OS in an ext4 partition.

Recent pulling GRUB2 supporting CSs into xen-3.4-testing.hg immediately makes sense to build xen 3.4.3-2.fc12.src.rpm to be able to set up current version of 3.4.3 Xen Hypervisor on Fedora 12 working pretty smoothly with Libvirt packages ( vs Xen 4.0) and the at same time supporting GRUB2 PV DomUs , say Ubuntu 9.10 Server or Debian Sqeeze.

StartUp Manager, or SUM, is a gui tool for changing settings in Grub, Grub2 and Usplash.SUM should work with recent versions of Debian and Debian-based distributions such as Ubuntu.

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid from a daily build yet couldn't boot into my fresh new desktop because I needed to add nomodeset to the grub2 boot line and didn't know how to do that because there was no boot screen visible.
