The FreeNAS developers have announced the availability of version 0.7 of FreeNAS (code named Khasadar), a FreeBSD-based Network-attached storage (NAS) UNIX-like server operating system. FreeNAS includes a full Web configuration graphical user interface (GUI) and supports the FTP, NFS, CIFS (Samba), AFP, rsync and iSCSI protocols and software RAID (0,1,5).

FreeNAS is one of those surprising projects that not only saves you a huge amount of money but is so simple to use that you'll wonder why there's so much mystery surrounding network-attached storage(NAS).

The FreeNAS Development Team is pleased to announce the availability of FreeNAS 0.7.1. This is a maintenance release of FreeNAS 0.7. It improves the functions, translations of WebGUI, and introduces new features: AIO, ATAPI CAM with iSCSI, custom Email report script, serial console, ZFS volumes and raw devices, iSCSI removable device.

This howto was written when I needed to run some php based web applications and the only system around was FreeNAS. Although many people are using php and MySQL on a FreeNAS box successfully I couldn't find any simple tutorial for the purpose, so I wrote one in case anyone needs it.

This is a major release, which introduces support for the ZFS file system among other things. Around the same time, fears were expressed about the future of FreeNAS as a BSD-based NAS but, in the end, a solution has been found.

You see, when I first started, my team had our very own "music" server where we stored all of our music files so we could listen to them at work, and share them. It was just a plain old file server running on an old beaten down box. It finally crashed, and we never brought it up again. I figured, why not bring it back? Plus I wanted to play with a free NAS server OS based on FreeBSD called FreeNAS. That is exactly what I did!
