Now that the article mentions Google: How should one go about building a free search engine? Is it enough that the software is free or should we also try to build a free metadata index so that not everyone has to start crawling web from scratch?

the article is right on - launchpad is proprietary, and so is the new landscape tool. canonical is a proprietary software vendor.

For web services, I believe it is more important for the users to easily switch services as well having the ability to download data dump than have totally Free softwares. Open standard is more important in this case.

Also website owners should choose Free softwares over their proprietary softwares as much as possible. This is for their own benefits, not the users. So they will alway have freedom to operate their website as they wish.

Yes, very insightful article. Google (for sure) and Canonical (nay be) are sucking as much "open information” as they can while we are navigating the web. It is as dangerous as Microsoft dominant position because it's done in silence.
