The Global Menu for Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 has just been uploaded to a PPA. The new "global menu" is called "Application Menu" and it can be installed in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx already (both in GNOME and KDE). Here's how.

In the netbook edition for 10.10, we're going to have a single menu bar for all applications, in the panel.

I posted an article about having a Mac-like interface for Ubuntu. However, it is not complete since the Mac style menu is not configured... Then I saw a project called Global Menu for Gnome under the Google Code site.

Theming one's OS to look like a Mac is all the rage these days, but for the most part such modifications are superficial. However, Global Menu actually changes the user experience quite a bit. For those who haven't seen a Mac before, [do such people exist?] on Mac OS, the menu for applications is located in a bar at the top of the screen, rather than the top of the window, like in Windows and Gnome.

In recent Linux related news I have been reading about the Ubuntu Control Center (UCC) and the Ubuntu Application Menu (Global Menu). The projects looked extremely interesting so I decided to install them and give them a try.

Global Menu is the globally-shared menu bar of all applications launched in your desktop session.

The Gnome2 GlobalMenu project is an attempt to produce a GTK module and panel applet for gnome2 that acts as a global public menu for all gtk-powered applications. Instead of the application menu appearing on the actual window below the window manager "bar" it always appears on the panel.

The Ubuntu menu can be customized so that it fits your needs and gives you access to what's important while not displaying menu items you'll never need. I've created a 'Customize The Ubuntu Menu' video and placed it on Youtube and at the end of this Ubuntu tutorial.
