The Writer's Tools extension adds a useful new menu to the popular, open source office suite OpenOffice.org that bakes convenient tools like Google Translate, an online dictionary lookup tool, email backup, remote backup to an FTP server and more directly into OO.org.

Suppose you need to chart some demographical or geographical data. Using OpenOffice.org's chart module you can present the data as a bar, pie, or even exploded donut chart. What you can't do, though, is to create a map chart that shows data distribution by continent, country, or region. To do this, you need the EuroOffice Map Chart Professional (EOMCP) extension.

EuroOffice is the name of a free and open-source OpenOffice.org derivative and a set of accompanying free and non-free extensions. Most of the extensions also work with "vanilla" OpenOffice.org.

While StarDict touts itself as "the best dictionary program for Linux and Windows," it has a serious challenger to the title called GoldenDict.

There are plenty of textbooks and teaching materials that can help you to learn foreign languages one way or another. Yet, there is no way to learn a foreign language without memorizing vocabulary and looking up words in a dictionary.

Two things that I have failed to mention for quite a long time now — in fact, three things — are a dictionary and spellchecker for the console. If you write as much as I do, those two things are important, and not wisely left out.

Firefox, one of the greatest browsers in the world, comes with it's own built in spell checker to help you ensure that all the words you type are correctly spelled. It won't help you with grammar, but hey, at least you'll have your spelling right.
