Using a purpose-built diary application can have some advantages over merely typing daily journal entries into a simple text editor. A specialized diary app takes care of the basic file management chores so you can open the file and make an entry without getting bogged down in the process of record-keeping. RedNotebook and Alamanah diary are two worthy options.

A simple text file is sometimes all one needs to put thoughts on virtual paper. But text documents, even advanced ones like Microsoft Word documents, do not cut it when it comes to maintaining a regularly updated diary or journal.

Writing in a journal or diary, where you may pour your heart out for no one’s eyes but your own, can be an intensely personal experience. Writing longhand in a paper notebook used to be standard practice for journal writing, but most people nowadays type faster than they write.
