Out of nowhere, an independent software developer has produced his own fast and fancy netbook operating system. It promises lightning boot times, an iPhone-esque icon-studded interface, modern cloud apps. The secret ingredient is Linux.

Acer and Amazon announced pre-sales for the first Android-powered netbook running on an Intel Atom. Acer's Aspire One AOD250-1613 netbook offers a 10.1-inch display, gesture-enabled touchpad, and a dual-boot system in which Android handles 18-second boot-ups.

On paper, Ubuntu Netbook Edition looks great. I mean, what's not to like? It's got a sexy launcher, a lean and mean footprint, fast boot times, ... and it's free!

There is just one week left until Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" will be released, but is it worth the upgrade if you are running a netbook? From our testing of the development releases, it is most certainly worth the upgrade, especially when compared to Ubuntu 9.04 with its buggy Intel driver stack that caused many problems for Atom netbook users.

Compare to earlier ubuntu versions karmic is much better in speed but if you still want to reduce your boot times use ubuntu boot Packages containing instrumentation to aid in boot performance work, and packages proposed to improve performance.

When you want to turn your toaster off, you just flip the switch. There is no concept of putting your toaster to sleep or in hibernation. Computers, though, must move around a lot and survive on batteries, so we have all sorts of fancy power-saving techniques.
Across all operating systems, perhaps especially Ubuntu, boot times are falling like a rock.

As previously announced at this years Computex trade show, Taiwanese firm Acer has now officially released its first Aspire One netbook running Google's open source Android mobile operating system (OS).

Now he has revealed Unity, a new interface that is aimed at netbooks users. He's also announced Ubuntu Light, a fast, light, version of Ubuntu that will offer almost instant-on boot times

Improving boot time has been a focus of Ubuntu developers in recent releases, with the goal of a ten-second startup set for Ubuntu 10.4.  To test progress thus far, I compared boot performance for Ubuntu 8.04, 9.04 and 9.10.  Below are the results, which demonstrate the impressive strides that have been made thus far towards a faster boot.
