Lubuntu is now an official Ubuntu derivative as of 10.04, it is the LXDE version of Ubuntu just as Kubuntu is a KDE edition or Xubuntu is an XFCE variation. I was looking for a solid lightweight distro to run on that would still provide we with the power and flexibility I was used to from Ubuntu, thus it is only natural that I should choose an Ubuntu derivative.

One of the defining characteristics of Linux is its open nature. As one of the most popular modern distributions, Ubuntu has seen its share of modifications, respins, and derivatives. One of the latest Ubuntu offspring is Lubuntu, which mixes the basic distribution with the LXDE desktop environment and Openbox window manager.

In previous reviews, I looked at the latest versions of Ubuntu and Kubuntu. Now it’s time to look at a lightweight alternative to both of them, Lubuntu. Lubuntu uses the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE) instead of the chunkier GNOME or KDE desktops.

Other than the default Ubuntu that we all know of, there are also the Kubuntu (KDE), Xubuntu (XFCE), Edubuntu, Mythbuntu etc that run different desktop environment and serve different purpose. And yes, there is a new buntu addition to the family. Let’s welcome: Lubuntu. Lubuntu is a Ubuntu variant built using the LXDE desktop, which is in turn based on Openbox.

With Ubuntu 14.04 closing in to the release date, which is set for April 17th, I took Lubuntu for a spin from the daily live ISO image. Lubuntu is the most lightweight distribution in the Ubuntu family (the other one being Xubuntu which uses Xfce), using LXDE (Lightweight X Desktop Environment), as well as a set of applications intended to be low on resources.

The Lubuntu project (Ubuntu based on LXDE) just published it's first ISO. LXDE is a very lightweight and minimal desktop environment using the openbox window manager, the PcManFM file manager, and a very select list of default applications.

Our candidate? Lubuntu, a Ubuntu flavor that uses LXDE as its desktop environment. I has everything that Ubuntu has going for it; large community support, tons of packages in the repositories and years of Ubuntu legacy and know-how.

For a long time, the Ubuntu family has had three members - Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu (sorry Edubuntu; we're not counting you).  But that may change, with a new project, Lubuntu, vying for official endorsement by Canonical.  Here's a look at Lubuntu, and thoughts on what its future may hold.
