If you're reading this on Kubuntu, then I honestly feel sorry for you. It's not that I hate KDE (in fact, I love it, even v3.5), it's just how badly misused it is in Kubuntu.

The author does manage to come
The author does manage to come up with one genuine complaint against the Kubuntu install when he says that he couldn't find Firefox or Synaptic.
If, at the end of the Kubuntu-install, you immediately attempt to apply the package updates *before* you do anything else you then won't be able to find either Firefox, or Synaptic and Adapt Package Manager will inform you that there are about 1200 packages available, all of which are "installed".
The only procedure I have found that works, is to immediately go to the Adept manager after the install *before* trying to use the update manager. You can then use Adept to install things like Firefox and Synaptic and Adept will then tell you that you have about 21,000 packages available, most of which are *not* installed. After this, you can either use Adept to "upgrade" all the updates, or you can use the update manager to do the same thing.
If you attempt to use the update manager first off, somehow it always breaks the normal operation of the Adept manager after that. This is a bug that has been in Kubuntu for several versions and really should have been eliminated by this stage.

I tried Kubuntu and found a very crippled KDE. I then installed Ubuntu and KDE and found the full featured KDE I was looking for.
Admittedly, I probably could have gone through Kubuntu adding packages to add all the features I was missing (had I known what I was looking for) but installing KDE on Ubuntu gave me everything.
