In this short guide I will show you how you can install the new Mozilla Firefox 4.0 browser (released March 22, 2011) on an Ubuntu 10.10 desktop. Fortunately, there's a Launchpad PPA repository that has Firefox 4.0 .deb packages, so we can easily install it through Ubuntu's package manager.

After a week or so of a major release in the form of firefox 3.5, mozilla team has released the first update, Firefox 3.5.1. You can install this latest updated version of Firefox 3.5 using Ubuntuzilla.

The latest Firefox build, Firefox 3.6.2 is released. And Ubuntuzilla Repository is the easiest way to install Firefox 3.6.2 in Ubuntu. Let's get started.

Firefox 3.6 final is out in the wild and yet again, most Ubuntu users are not able to upgrade their resident Firefox 3.5 to this latest release. Let's cut the chase. All you need to do is to get the latest version of Ubuntuzilla...

This guide explains several methods on installing the latest Firefox in Ubuntu, including installing it from a PPA repository.

I. Install Firefox from the Firefox PPA repository
1. The CLI (command-line interface) way
This is probably the easiest method. Don't forget to read the Creating a new profile section below after installing Firefox.

Firefox 3.5 has been released several weeks ago, but some Ubuntu 9.04 users out there may still be using the older 3.0 version. They should not expect that they will get an automatic update since this latest Firefox release will not be officially included in Ubuntu until 9.10 "Karmic Koala".

Not long ago Mozilla changed the release cycle of Firefox, so that major new versions (Firefox 5, 6 and so on) will be released every 2-3 months. Currently, the latest alpha release is Firefox 6 Aurora, while the latest beta development version is Firefox Beta 5, which has made it into the Firefox Next PPA already. Installing this version should be very easy if you follow the next steps.

If you are running a recent distribution release, say, Ubuntu 11.04 or Linux Mint 11, you are likely running Firefox 4. But what if you want to run the bleeding edge version (of Firefox), that is the Daily Build?

I was telling you about my issues with scrolling in Firefox (see #6). Well, I didn't manage to fix that for Firefox 3.5 but instead, I installed Firefox 3.6 beta 1 pre (Namoroka) and the scrolling now works perfectly (thanks to Tinhed for the tip!). Also, basically everything feels a lot faster, at least in Ubuntu. This is why I suggest you upgrade to Firefox 3.6.
