Smarter than M$
Back when they set up my first dual-boot experience of Free Software, the techie's explained that M$ had to go on first because it wouldn't know if there was a Linux partition already there, whereas Linux could automatically detect the presence of Windows and work around it.
Free Software was much smarter than M$, back then, and nothing's changed ever since.
