Whilst an increasing number of recent converts are avoiding it (and I don't blame them really), the shell is still a key tool for the majority of GNU/Linux users. Shell scripts are knocked-up, shared and deployed in all sorts of circumstances - some simply time-saving, others life-saving.

Konqueror has the distinction of being the default file manager as well as the default web browser of KDE 3.xx. It supports basic file management on local UNIX filesystems, from simple cut/copy and paste operations to advanced remote and local network file browsing. It has support for KIO slaves and has the KParts object through which it can embed components like media player, KWord etc. As a web browser it is HTML 4.01 compliant, supporting Java applets, JavaScript, CSS 1, CSS 2.1, as well as Netscape plugins (for example, Flash or RealVideo plugins).

Beside its openness, there is also one more reason why ODF is great for everybody who must produce a lot of office documents: ODF is really simple to generate or edit automatically. Even if you aren't a professional programmer, it takes very little effort to put together a script that generates or processes in any way texts, presentations or spreadshets in ODF format.

Converting a PDF file into an HTML or a XML file has been made easy by a small useful utility called PDFTOHTML. PdftoHTml is a Xpdf based tool which can convert PDF files to HTML or XML format. PDFTOHTML also supports encrypted files and support for images in the PDF file by converting to PNG images files.

"...Okay, now, how about this one … do you work with (or even just read) XHTML? Probably, if you’re involved in XML work, your HTML conforms to a great degree to the formal XHTML standard. Here is a simple shell script that generates a list of process running on a GNU/Linux system containing the process' PID, name and path. The script is straight forward and one can easily modify it according to their needs.

Although Picasa is now available on GNU/Linux, it is still proprietary and, as such, unethical. One year ago, I wrote a simple Bash script that handles a very rapid download of entire PicasaWeb albums/galleries. During the last weeks, Google changed twice the format of the related Web pages and my script could not fetch any picture.
