One of the most mentioned ideas at Ubuntu Brainstorm is creating a custom installation/live cd website-as-service which would allow users to customize their install/live cd, in the spirit of Linux and open-source in general. A service like this already exists: Reconstructor, a web based GNU/Linux distribution customization and creation toolkit.

The folks over at Linux Mint have just released their newest, latest and greatest, Linux Mint 9 “Isadora”. This time, though, instead of having a single LiveCD to Rule Them All, they offer a LiveCD, LiveDVD and an OEM CD that does not create a default user account. Since I don’t have immediate access to a DVD burner here, I’ll be using the LiveCD. Let’s take a look, shall we?

After the new login screen, new themes and the new boot splash theme introduced the other day, Canonical finally updated the old Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) wallpaper with a brand new one.

CentOS, the popular community Linux distribution based upon Red Hat Enterprise Linux, has been at version 5.0 since April of this year, but joining the CentOS 5.0 fleet today is the LiveCD. The CentOS 5.0 LiveCD is based upon CentOS 5.0 i386 and can work out to be a modest Linux workstation or recovery distribution.

Every conference room has a system hooked up to the beamer that is running a custom CentOS-based LiveCD (actually a LiveUSB) image. But the funny thing is that the conference also has 2 large flat screens at the entrance to show what presentations are coming next. It is a very nice idea to guide people quickly to a starting presentation.

There are various Linux distributions that use the livecd, but this time I am just going to try livecd of ubuntu and PCLinuxOS distro. To see the best capabilities of two live cd distro.

After installing all of the latest updates to Ubuntu Hardy Heron, I noticed they made a major change to the theme: there is a new default wallpaper on the GNOME desktop. It is still based on the brown Ubuntu color scheme, but at least it is more cheery. I wonder if this thread had anything to do with the sudden change…
