If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you grew up with classic video game consoles like the NES and Sega Genesis. For years Windows users have been enjoying high quality game emulation software, but many of the Linux options have been buggy or incomplete. It’s time to take a look at where things stand when it comes to playing console games in Linux.

The standard size of the console is 80 columns and 25 lines, which is too big if you want to work easily in console and don't even use a desktop environment (or use one but also prefer to do things in console rather than an X terminal). It will also look nicer when booting up the system.

Emulation refers to the duplication of functions of one system using a different system. Specifically, an emulator is software specifically written to emulate aspects of the original console or computer, primarily the CPU, I/O and memory system.

In my large list of console applications to mention, I have two or three games, plus a pack of classic games that are worth revisiting. But so long as I am looking over console goodies, it would be a shame to leave them out.
