Welcome to part 4 of our media player roundup. Today we'll be covering a couple of interesting players that most older Linux users may remember, and most new users may not even know exists. We'll also be covering players that don't typically fit what would be considered the norm for a media player, but which provide you with quite a wide range of possible applications for daily use.

Totem Media Player is one of the most widely used media player amongst Linux user. Given its ability to handle many formats using the versatile G-Streamer framework, it has become a one stop all player for users who favor simplicity over the advanced VLC Player.

The other feature worth writing about, is ROSA Media Player, or ROMP. It is a media player with a feature you will not find in Totem or other media players in other Linux or BSD desktop distributions. It is actually a fork of SMPlayer and was first released in November 2011.

Embedded development firm NthCode announced a media player for IP-ready DVD players, TVs, and other Linux-based devices. NthCode Player automatically connects to home networks, and then catalogs all available media, offering WebKit browser access to media, plus feeds from BitTorrent and RSS.

VideoLAN (VLC), a player started as a student project and turned into one of the best, most popular media players worldwide, has recently had a birthday - turned 1.0. I thought this was an excellent opportunity to write about it and just show you how great it is.

There are a lot of media players out there. One really great one is VLC media player. It was initially released in 2001 by a group at Ecole Centrale Paris.

Linux came a long way concerning music players in the last couple of years and if in the past there were only few choices for users - XMMS has to be mentioned here - well, now there are so many players to choose from, and if most share the same features, each one provides an alternative by bringing a new feature or a different interface. This I can tell, can satisfy any user's taste.

Songbird is a free and open source software audio player and web browser founded by Rob Lord and developed by Pioneers of the Inevitable , with a stated mission "to incubate Songbird, the first Web player, to catalyze and champion a diverse, open Media Web."

For me the the best free media player for Windows and Linux is mplayer. It is not only a very fast player, but it also offers a ton of advanced options.
