Ubuntu is a great distro, but it still needs some slight tweaking to get it just right. I’m going to show you how to use Automatix2 to get your OS perfected. For those of you unfamiliar with Automatix2, its basically software that makes installing add-on software easier in Ubuntu. There are ways to grab these packages without Automatix2 but you might have to get your hands dirty, so for simplicities sake bear with me. In random order:

Great! Install a free software

Great! Install a free software operating system, then make it proprietary by following these 10 easy steps.

(Does the "Bury" link do what I think it does?)

mfoetsch: Exactly. Automatix2

mfoetsch: Exactly. Automatix2 is good for nothing except installing proprietary software, or free software that illegally supports patented formats. It's not even necessary for the latter.

However, if you are looking for a free version of Ubuntu I recommend gNewSense (http://www.gnewsense.org/), which is a free versio nof Ubuntu.

I used to agree - Automatix, easyubuntu...

I used to agree - Automatix, easyubuntu... all software that was essentially bad.
However, then I installed a PC for a friend. Yes, it was Ubuntu. And no, he wouldn't have kept it without being able to play his MP3 (huge collection), see movies in his news site... I was disheartened. We agreed I would convert all of his collection of music into a free format, but well, that was 2 months ago :-/

Any time I ever see a tip or howto

Any time I ever see a tip or howto with the words Automatix or Easyubuntu in them I automatically discount them. These are not good tools to use if you ever plan to upgrade your system.

I am willing to accept that some

I am willing to accept that some people have to temporarily install proprietary software (in Ubuntu, in the restricted and multiverse repositories). This should be a choice of the user, after wheighing the lack of freedom this will entail against the need to have their hardware work, being able to read files in proprietary formats or accessing content on the web. It is not good, however, that newcomers automatically install proprietary software, drivers, codecs, etc. without even realising what they are doing.
