To Jim Zemlin you need no longer care about your operating system. You don’t buy an operating system. You buy a gadget that runs a program. The gadget and its software are one unit. I call this Invisible Linux.

IF you go by what the mainstream press reports, you’d think there were only two computer desktop operating systems in the world—Windows and Mac OS. This notion would be most unfortunate because it might keep you or your company from exploring Linux as a reliable, secure and powerful desktop operating system for your PC that’s cheaper than the two proprietary platforms.

The Sydney Morning Herald has a Q&A with Linux kernel creator Linus Torvalds. It’s an interesting read, but one part more than any stood out for me: “An o/s should never have been something that people (in general) really care about: it should be completely invisible and nobody should give a flying [expletive deleted] about it except the technical people.”

Remember the ever-popular "boy gets invisible and heads into girls locker room" storyline in movies? Free software may be about to make this dream a reality!

There are a number of Open Source electronic medical record software packages (EMR). There are even more proprietory EMR packages. Many of the FOSS EMR can compete with the commercial ones. Despite the fact that they mostly run on free OS such as Linux they are mostly invisible.

Just like Marcel Gagne said, stop apologizing for Linux! "Invisible Linux" is a loser strategy, and it's insulting.
