GroundWork Open Source, Inc. (www.groundworkopensource.com), announced today Mozilla’s Firefox was successful in beating out the other three contestants, reigning champion “Tux” the Linux kernel penguin, “Beastie” the BSD demon and the GNU “Gnu” to become the world’s favorite Open Source Idol.

Now it's hard to deny that some Linux fans can be pretty evangelistic about their operating system of choice but I wouldn't have thought that that religious dedication would extend so far at to want an idol of the Linux mascot, Tux the penguin, sitting on one's desk.

Linux fans are now being compared to Cubs fans. For you non-sports enthusiasts, the cubs haven’t won a world series since 1908. According to Ben Gray of Forrester, “as optimistic as Linux enthusiasts are and will forever remain, they’re beginning to sound like Cubs fans with the never-ending hope of ‘There’s always next year.’”

It seems that a full scale mutiny and rebellion against the music labels has begun. Several major bands, including Oasis, Jamiroquai and Radiohead as well as rock band "Throwdown" have gone together to encourage their fans to download their music. The bands are doing this because they've realized that by allowing the fans to share music, they're selling more music in the end.

"It was a partial harmonisation with only those parts of American law that favoured certain interests," he said. "The reality is that American law doesn't change; Australian law changes, but specifically it excludes the consumer-friendly parts of American copyright law, namely the doctrine of fair use."

So, is open source anti-American?

Whitehurst admitted that open source advocates in the developing world benefit from an anti-American, and anti-Western bias where it exists.
