I recently finished the book Pragmatic Thinking and Learning: Refactor Your Wetware by Andy Hunt, co-author of the seminal book The Pragmatic Programmer. In this book Hunt discusses how people (specifically software developers) learn and offers tips on how we can set out to learn more effectively. Here are some useful tips I stumbled upon while reading Pragmatic Thinking and Learning:

Software Freedom Day (SFD) is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Our goal in this celebration is to educate the worldwide public about of the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business -- in short, everywhere!

Both communities are overly defensive in which term to use to describe software that gives you the freedom to change and share it. If both communities could unite and both movements converge imagine how much more we could accomplish.

This new book "Open Advice" is the answer to "What would you have liked to know when you started contributing?". 42 prominent free and open source software contributors give insights into the many different talents it takes to make a successful software project, coding of course but also design, translation, marketing and other skills. They are here to give you a head start if you are new.

While organizing some of my ancient stuff, I saw this book that I have read during the 90’s that I wanted to share to my young readers for they might never heard about it. This very fascinating book is entitled, “The Cuckoo's Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage”.

I was surfing around yesterday, I noticed that OpenSource.com has an article about building communities that work.

The successful deployment of free and open source software (FOSS) in projects in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe and Latin America are described in a publication entitled "Breaking Barriers" by UNDP's Asia-Pacific Development Information Programme.

Even if all open source communities aren't created equal, there are several characteristics that stand out amongst those which flourish. Qualities and tendencies which are often taken as a given within the context of open source but can and do go missing within other types of communities.

When I started work on The Art of Community I was really keen that it should be a body of work that all communities have access to. My passion behind the book was to provide a solid guide to building, energizing and enabling pro-active, productive and enjoyable communities.
