I mentioned earlier that I had some objections to this new “Indicator” crapplet in Ubuntu Jaunty, I view it as a kind of foistware that has nothing to do with the system.

The new Ubuntu that will be released in april, codename Jaunty has a new notifications popup system. Here is how you can install it in Ubuntu Intrepid:

New in Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope (9.04) Alpha 6: the installer's revamped timezone map (see the fourth screenshot on the third row). The notification system was improved. Also, The GIMP has only one entry in the panel and not three, or two if you leave only the Toolbox opened (see the fourth screenshot on the first row).

Ubuntu 9.04 is the upcoming version of the Ubuntu operating system. The common name given to this release from the time of its early development was “Jaunty Jackalope”.

For those who are using Ubuntu Jaunty, you will notice that there is a change in the way the system notifies you to upgrade software. In the past, an icon will appear on the system tray whenever there is new update available. In Ubuntu Jaunty, instead of showing the icon, the update manager will now pop up the window as and when it detects new update.

I decided yesterday to upgrade from Ubuntu Intrepid to Jaunty (Release Candidate). Alt + F2 and typed: update-manager -d

and after the restart I only had a few minor issues:
