...there are a few aspects of Linux that do annoy/frustrate/anger me/make me hulk out* (delete as overall mood dictates), and one of these aspects is so core to an OS that I’m surprised that it hasn’t been addressed already. I’m talking about installing applications.

Use Synaptic package manager
He'd be better off using Synaptic package manager rather than add/remove programs, it would give him a lot more information and tell him where the downloaded packages went.
