The Linux Foundation announced the first round of keynote speakers and several mini-summits for its upcoming conference, LinuxCon. The event, scheduled for August 10-12, 2010 in Boston, MA, draws FOSS users and developers from around the country to learn, discuss, and collaborate on all things Linux.

One of the advantages we Linux geeks like to claim over competing operating systems is the flexibility of the system. We're not talking about changing your screen saver--we're talking the guts of the operating system itself.

In this final installment of Paul Ferrill's series on building your own high-powered Linux workstation, it is time to install the operating system. Or actually several operating systems, putting a whole computer lab in a box.

The next time you're talking about the standardization and the International Organization for Standardization comes up, be sure to pronounce it as "Iso" and not "I-S-O."

Like most people who do tech work of some sort or another for a living I love my toys. I’d love to have the latest and greatest gee whiz system and if I won the lottery I probably always would. Today’s best full-featured distros all have native 64-bit versions. One of my favorites, Vector Linux was a little late to the table but I’m pleased to report that the current release, Vector Linux 5.9 Standard, has a 64-bit version in beta right now. Good news.

The program and schedule for LinuxCon 2010 has been finalized and with the announcement comes news of additional keynote speakers and session details. Representatives from Intel and Nokia will discuss the future of MeeGo in the keynote, "Freedom to Innovate: Can MeeGo's Openness Change the Mobile Industry?"

A team of experts and students from NICTA and the University of NSW have won first place in a major international technology competition for developing a robotically operated, computer-driven clarinet that runs on Linux.

The opening talk will be from Lars Knoll of Trolltech who will tell us about their plans for Qt 4.4 and their relationship with KDE. Mark Shuttleworth of Canonical will be talking on the 10 Challenges to Open Source. On Sunday, Dan Kohn of The Linux Foundation will talk on the state of Linux Standardisation on the Desktop.
