Late yesterday Anirudh Acharya, aka infra_red_dude, started a new support thread for the Mac4Lin Transformation Pack on the Ubuntu Forums. The old thread was moved to the archive section of the forums some time back and a couple weeks ago it had been locked so there was no good way to get assistance for it.

One of the strong points of the Ubuntu community is the forums. To many new users, the ability to get quick answers to their questions for free is an incredible resource. Unfortunately, not every user has a great experience on the forums. WorksWithU recently posted a list of tips for those giving support on the Ubuntu forums.

I spend a fair amount of time on UbuntuForums.org and while poking around there this afternoon I came across this thread. To quickly sum up the thread the original poster is detailing why he believes Ubuntu is not ready for the "average user" because of a recent poor experience he had.

I use UbutuTweak to help me set options in Ubuntu, including my GTK login splash. But while reading the latest posts on a thread in the Ubuntu Forums about installing Google Gadgets I came across a post that surprised me.

The Ubuntu team is proud to announce version 7.10 of the Ubuntu family of
distributions. I have also posted the torrent link in the comments.

OKAY, this is just not fair: [T]he ubuntu forums are “disappearing” threads that are critical of mono … and people seem perfectly alright with that. I spent a lot of time posting to a thread yesterday, only to come back on today to see it removed from the boards. Same thing on brainstorm with votes being “disappeared”.

The new Ubuntu font ("Ubuntu Font Family") has just been uploaded to the Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat official repositories and was made default for both Ubuntu desktop and netbook as well as Kubuntu. The Ubuntu Font Family has been released as a Libre font, licensed under the Ubuntu Font Licence 1.0.

I usually don’t look at the Grub kernel list when I boot my Ubuntu box, but last month I noticed that all of the kernels in my list showed “crunchbang” rather than “Ubuntu 9.04″. I did some searching and found a thread on the Ubuntu Forums about the issue and dstew made a great comment that helped me track down the problem.

Before Ubuntu there was Mepis. At that time it one of the most user-friendly Linux distribution available. Despite being overshadowed by the popularity of Ubuntu in recent years, SimplyMepis is still one of the most friendly desktop distributions in the Linux landscape.
