Nine years ago today, Oct 13th, OpenOffice.org was called into being. It has been a pretty successful 9 years, with OOo having achieved approx 10% market share and even more in certain segments and countries.

I was surprised and delighted to find this video presentation by one of my favorite performers, Stephen Fry, called "Happy Birthday to GNU", on the GNU project homepage.

The OpenOffice.org conference celebrating the tenth birthday of OpenOffice.org started in Budapest yesterday morning. Here are some first notes from the field.

IBM calls its new office productivity suite, built upon OpenOffice, Lotus Symphony. This disappoints two groups. The first group, fans like me of OpenOffice, wish it kept the OpenOffice name to help further the open cause. The second group wishes the old Lotus Symphony office suite, an early competitor to Microsoft Office, had climbed out of the grave.

Just in time for its (and my) birthday, OpenOffice.org 3.0 was officially released today, after several builds had been found on the FTP sites several weeks before.
