Although I certainly respect Bill and Melinda Gates for what they do (how many billionaires do you see doing the charitable works they have been doing?), they and Microsoft are not the only ones working towards this goal.

Shuttleworth and Gates are in two
Shuttleworth and Gates are in two entirely different leagues.
Shuttleworth truly seems to have the communities best interests at heart and is using his wealth to create a business which has a side effect of helping society. Gates, OTOH, is what is known as a robber baron:
Robber baron was a term revived in the 19th century in the United States as a pejorative reference to businessmen and bankers who dominated their respective industries and amassed huge personal fortunes, typically as a direct result of pursuing various allegedly anti-competitive or unfair business practices. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robber_baron_(industrialist)
Now he gives a little of the money he has stolen back. He'll never have my respect.

Bill Gates is a head of a non-profit
Bill Gates is a head of a non-profit foundation. He does gave back to society.
Now, concerning his anti-competitive business practice, that's a whole another ball game. It is unethical, plain and simple.

@Kiba: If I steal all of your
@Kiba:
If I steal all of your money and then give you a couple of dollars back in the name of charity will you think of me as charitable?
If I steal billions of dollars from the whole planet and then decide where I want to give it back will you think of me as charitable?
...Clearly not. People just don't realize they have been stolen from every time they buy a computer. Information should be free. Society gives it to us. We should give it back.
He also gives large sums of money to politicians so that the laws will be made in favor of his business.
Gates is not a nice man. Oh and I imagine he gets nice tax deductions from all his charity work too.

Some people know far too little
Some people know far too little about where the Foundation's money goes and what it gets _in return_.
