The Free Software Foundation (FSF) today issued a warning to consumers over Microsoft's upcoming Windows 7 Phone Series. The software release is backed by a reported 400 to 500 million dollar marketing campaign that aims to distract consumers from its history of abusive behavior, and recent actions as a patent troll: attacking free software based phones like Android.

On its DefectiveByDesign.org campaign page, the Free Software Foundation (FSF) has announced that 4 May (today) will be this year's "Day Against DRM". With this day of action, the organisation wants to focus the public's attention on the risks of what it considers to be an anti-social technology. The FSF has created a wiki page which allows users to swap campaign banners and event ideas.

Richard Stallman of the Free Software Foundation, and Gnu, has lead a very successful Free Software campaign. He’s helped grow a very strong free software community through his efforts. There are now many different distributions of Gnu/Linux that quietly run 80% of web servers on the internet. Not to mention the very successful Wikipedia was inspired by Gnu and their philosophy.

Groups that campaign for free technology, like the Free Software Foundation and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, tend to be supported primarily by technologists. Both groups have struggled to communicate their messages to non-geeks.

[Windows7Sins] has received too a lot of negative criticism, thought, centered in an idea somewhat similar to the one I exposed in the beginning: “We must center on the good things free software can offer, instead of the enemy’s bad points”.
