The Debian Project is pleased to mark the 17th anniversary of its start. As the official project history states: "The Debian Project was officially founded by Ian Murdock on August 16th, 1993. At that time, the whole concept of a 'distribution' of Linux was new. Ian intended Debian to be a distribution which would be made openly, in the spirit of Linux and GNU".

In August 1993, Ian Murdock founded the Debian project and nurtured the free open source operating system into one of the most popular Linux distributions, supported by an established community of developers.
It’s hard to believe that Debian has 17 years under its belt, but the project celebrated its 17th birthday on August 16. Though Debian may not be quite as well hyped as other distros, it’s still one of the most important FOSS projects around.
