The site includes more than 6,500 free and open source software (FOSS) programs for users to download, run and share. According to the FSF, each entry in the Directory is individually checked and tested so that users can be assured that any program they find there "will be free software with free documentation and without proprietary software requirements".

Canonical is developing a Directory Services strategy that could help Ubuntu Server Edition compete (and integrate) more effectively with Microsoft, Windows Server and Active Directory. In addition to a partnership with Likewise Software, Canonical is seeking external experts to help accelerate the Directory Services initiative.

Mandriva Directory Server is free software GPL licenced enterprise directory platform based on LDAP designed to manage identities, access control informations, policies, application settings and user profiles. If you already use Samba, Postfix, Squid or CUPS, you can benefit from MDS today to manage your infrastructure.

Join the FSF and friends on Friday November 16th, from 2pm to 5pm EDT (18:00 to 21:00 UTC) to help improve the Free Software Directory by adding new entries and updating existing ones. TrueCrypt is a free software that encrypts data “on-the-fly”. Right now the newest version released is version 4.3. You can create an encrypted hard drive, a separate partition or a directory with TrueCrypt. It doesn’t simply encrypt the content of files, but their names and the names of the directories they are in as well.
