Developer Matthew Dillon has announced the release of version 2.4 of DragonFly BSD, originally created as a fork from FreeBSD 4.x. The major release includes several bug fixes, performance improvements and a new 64-bit port.
DragonFly BSD, the FreeBSD fork, has been updated to version 2.6.1 and incorporates a added a number of new features whilst updating the components of the clustering oriented operating system
DragonFly, like the other BSDs, imports code from other members of the family when it makes sense, such as the malloc() security features from OpenBSD, parts of the WiFi subsystem from FreeBSD, and USB code from NetBSD. In spite of this, development has been pushed in some unique directions.
Opera has freed its first open source project, moving code for its Dragonfly debug tool onto the popular BitBucket hosting service. Dragonfly - a website debug tool similar to Mozilla's Firebug - was always intended as an open source project. From its inception in 2008, it carried an open source BSD license. But until this month, the code repository sat on Opera servers.
Project leader Matthew Dillon is starting to commit parts of his HAMMER file system work into DragonFlyBSD; he anticipates it being available in beta form by the 2.0 release at the end of this year. He posted a design document, describing how it should work.
The KDE team have announced the release of KDE 4.1. This is the first feature release after the initial KDE 4.0 release and is apparently designed to address many of the issues early adopters had with the 4.0 release.
Keith Packard has announced the official release of X.Org Server 1.9 this evening. Besides this release offering up various bug-fixes and minor improvements, this X Server release is noteworthy as it happens to be the first release in recent times to actually make it out on time. X.Org Server 1.9 hit its original release schedule of being released on the 20th of August.
