The time is right
Actually I think the time is exactly right for cheap GNU/Linux desktop or laptop computers to enter the market. The most popular distos are ready for desktop use (they arguably have been for the last couple of years), and with the economy taking a downturn retailers will be looking to cut their costs as much as they can.
