Appalling, but not surprising.
A lot of FOSS enthusiasts have huddled around IBM for quite some time, and have forgotten that this company is just as heartless as any other multinational computer corporation. It's a shame, too, but hardly surprising. Just look at Lotus Symphony, their proprietary competitor to Open Office. I spy a trend here.
