The first of the bashshell.net "5 Days of find" series, this tutorial breaks down the basics of the find command. With the Linux find utility, you can perform powerful searches on just about any criterion you can think of, and then, from the same command-line entry, invoke another utility to do whatever you need to do with the results.

You can direct grep to search through one file or many. You can also pipe in output from some other utility so that you’ll see only the information that you want to see. And, the fact that grep uses regular expressions allows you to perform searches even when you only have an approximate idea of what you’re searching for.

There are search tools and then there are SEARCH TOOLS. Any Linux user that has ever needed real power for their searches generally has to resort to the command line. But what if you could have a GUI tool that could also handle regular expressions?

Firefox only (Windows/Mac/Linux): Firefox extension Find In Tabs searches for text across all of your open Firefox tabs. It does so by adding a Find in Tabs button to the find bar that switches from the normal single-page search to a multi-tab search.

Here's a brief example of applying a regex, drawn from the UNIX command-line utility grep, which searches for a specified pattern among the content of one or more UNIX text files. The command grep -i -E '^Bat' searches for the sequence beginning-of-line (indicated with the caret, [^]), followed immediately by upper- or lowercase letters b, a, and t (the -i option ignores case in pattern matches, so B and b are equivalent, for instance). Hence, given the file heroes.txt:

Anyway, one really cool feature I missed from Firefox was the ability to set multiple pages as the homepage.

Use parentheses to create the string matches you need in regular expressions. Parentheses allows you to use pipes for multiple matches.

The traditional way to find files on a Linux system has been with the appropriately-named “find” command: give it part of a filename and it will hunt through a whole tree of folders for it.
