My Asus Eee PC 701 is a brilliant low-cost ultraportable notebook, but it has a really small screen (seven inches diagonally). I needed to find out how to make the best use of the available area when I was using the Firefox Web browser.

On every computer I’m using I like to get the maximum screen estate I can. I also like to enjoy my wall papers without having the two default Gnome panels in the way. Here are some tweaks I do on every computer I use (that’s true especially for notebooks and netbooks like the eeePc ).

Even though Ubuntu Netbook Remix is already somewhat optimized, I don't like how some things work and also there is room for a lot more optimizations. I would like to share with you these optimizations, all with screen real estate and low power consumption in mind. A part of this article is for EeePC only, but most work on any netbook!

The screen lock of openSUSE 11.2 can be bypassed by the simplest of means. A reader's report prompted The H's associates at heise Security to investigate. Tests confirmed that a locked desktop session can be unlocked without password by holding down the return key. This causes the GNOME screen saver to crash and unlock the desktop after only a few seconds.
