Out of all the Linux distribution to replace your old Microsoft’s Windows OS, Ubuntu has to be one of your choices. It seems to be one of the easiest to learn and operate. I know that there are other Linux users that may disagree, but you cannot deny that there are pages after pages of information on “how to” segments on the Internet.

There have been a lot of positive things going on in the Ubuntu space, but there has been at least one change where a Ubuntu consumer has returned to good old Debian - one of the first adopters, SimplyMEPIS. Warren Woodford found that the LTS version, 6.06 of Ubuntu, upon which SimplyMEPIS has been based since V6.0, receives security updates but otherwise few, if any, new packages.

Acer installs Ubuntu
COMPUTER MAKER Acer seems to have followed Dell's lead and started preinstalling Ubuntu in at least one range of its laptops.
So far there has been only one reported advertisement for an Ubuntu based product, in Singapore. Ubuntu has been shoved under the bonnet of its Intel duel core Aspire 5710z machines which are selling for £326.

when I loaded the live CD six months ago, it was more a case of having a couple of hours to kill. Anyway, I was surprised to find that everything worked…just like that. The more I fooled around with it, the more it intrigued me. I was able to do a lot of stuff without having to do a lot of searching and fixing.

Grandpa Gets a Dell with Ubuntu Linux Preinstalled
Groklaw member Tyche got a Dell Inspiron 530N with Ubuntu Linux and when I saw him post that he'd ordered it, I asked if he'd please write up a quick review after it arrived. He has done so, and as you will see, he found getting online so easy he had nothing at all to do to make it happen. Just poof.

Fedora vs. Ubuntu and Target Audience
It is not unusual to see people comparing Fedora to Ubuntu or pointing out how Ubuntu is gaining “mind share”, more hits on google, etc. I question the validity of these comparison. Sure, any two or more things can be compared and one can garner more attention than another, but that doesn’t mean one is better unless you have common criteria.
