Recently there have been several posts on different blogs about changing the name of Ubuntu and it's derivatives Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Edubuntu to things like Ubuntu GNOME Edition, Ubuntu KDE Edition, Ubuntu XFCE Edition and Ubuntu Educational Edition.

Maybe you remember the two posts I made about the Ubuntu Wanted site. The idea now has got 83 votes and I’ve already created a blueprint. Now it is also being discussed at the ubuntu-website mailist.

Got to be honest, the first time I heard about Ubuntu was sometime April of this year over at Archon-Digital’s blog when he made an article of his switch to Ubuntu. Even after reading his post, I still didn’t get the idea of what exactly Ubuntu is all about.

With the upcoming release of Ubuntu Hardy Heron, it’s likely there will be an influx of complete Linux newbies that are trying the operating system (in its shiny, new Ubuntu incarnation) for the first time. Just under a year ago, I put together a Linux terminology jargon buster, designed to explain some of these new Linux terms to those who are just starting out.

The Ubuntu Eee project has just announced they will be selling SD cards pre-loaded with the latest version of Eee Ubuntu. This SD card can then be inserted into the Eee PC and you can run Eee Ubuntu right off of it. This is a great idea, but it would be even better if the cards were sold in stores along with the Eee PC.

Everyone agrees that Ubuntu is making huge progress towards mainstream adoption. But what do we mean when we say "Ubuntu"? Don't we really mean *buntu, a collection of all Ubuntu versions? How do we explain this to the mainstream user? Will the names "Kubuntu", "Edubuntu" and "Xubuntu" make sense to a newcomer? Are they self-explanatory?
