We have reason to celebrate because FSDaily recently crossed the 1000 user mark! This is great news because we have only been up and running for 3 months and have only been advertising on Free Software Magazine. So word of mouth must be working well.

Anybody up to writing good directory software?
Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David JonathanSince the very beginning, directories (of any kind) have had a very central role in the internet. (I have recently grown fond of Free Web Directory. Even Slashdot can be considered a directory: a collection of great news and invaluable user-generated comments. As far as software is concerned, doing a quick search on Google about software directories will return the free (as in freedom) software directories like Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat and so on, followed by shareware and freeware sites such as FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and All Freeware (great if you're looking for shareware and freeware, but definitely less comprehensive than their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).
Is better education the key to finding better software?
Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward RusselI read David Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software? the other day, which got me thinking about software directories in general. As David mentioned, many of the software directories one finds when doing a quick google search are free as in beer, not as in freedom. But what interests me is the software directories that already exist, providing a combination of both free as in beer software, and open source software. Sites such as Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download don't advertise themselves as providing free as in liberty software, but each of them have a good selection of open source software available... if you know where to look.

Thanks spikeb. We are very greatful for your participation. If even half of our 1000 users would do those two things it'd make a huge difference.

Suggestion: Can we have a Message/Inbox
Suggestion:
Can we have a Message/Inbox style thing that lets you know when someone replies to your comment (a la reddit.com)? That makes continuing discourse a lot easier. Now we have to go profiles -> comments -> each story to check the comments.
FWIW: I vote, read, comment, and recently, submit.

Tony is working on a new system
Tony is working on a new system for FSDaily based off Drupal at the moment. The module that he is building to turn Drupal into a digg-style site will be known as "Drupligg" and will be released under the GPL.
There is a subscriptions module (which I think does what you are asking for) which is available for Drupal. Which means we should be able to use it (along with hundreds of other modules) once the new site is ready.
Having our project's source code available to the community (including formulas for burying and promotion) will hopefully lead to us having the best possible system for our community. And, if anyone wants to add features to FSDaily then they can lend a hand by building and submitting patches to Tony who will be maintaining the module. He can then incorporate them into the module if we think the feature is useful enough.
