Order Against Comcast Issued, FCC Credits EFF

http://www.eff.org

"The FCC has finally published its order (adopted on August 1) directing Comcast to stop blocking BitTorrent traffic. The 34-page ruling makes for surprisingly enjoyable reading, at least as FCC publications go. The order follows the basic outline that was explained by Chairman Martin in his statement on August 1, 2008. But there are some interesting additional tidbits: ..."

Being open about "open" (source)

http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com

I’m not sure why it bothers me: I use the word “Free” when I’m talking about “Free Software”, and “Open” when I mean “Open source”. I’m very particular about my words, that way. But that’s just me. I don’t expect another religion to follow the rules of my own, or vice-versa.

Eric Hunting on the historical origins of peer to peer architecture

http://blog.p2pfoundation.net

"...I think the P2P movement is rediscovering something that has existed as a fundamental aspect of true communities since the origin of civilization but which western culture lost the memory of over the Industrial Age as it systematically disrupted or destroyed traditional communities in favor of new macro-communities, reducing human beings to economic units and cultivating a mass sociopathy..."

Why Debian is different

http://www.itwire.com

As the Debian GNU/Linux project marks 15 years of existence, how much has it diverged from the intentions with which it set sail? As times change and people correspondingly change, motivating factors often tend to change and this is reflected in changes in most software projects. Is this true for Debian?

Anybody up to writing good directory software?

Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David Jonathan

From the very start, directories have served a very useful purpose on the Internet. (One I find useful for example is Free Web Directory). News sites can also be considered directories: they index and categorize news stories! What about categorizing software? In the open source world you get Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat; there are still, believe it or not, shareware and freeware directories like FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and Freeware Downloads (although you need to be careful, as they are not like their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).

Is better education the key to finding better software?

Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward Russel

About Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software?, it's clear that the topic of software directories is very hot. Most of what you find on Google, however, are not pointing to free and open soruce software -- or worse, they mix the two. Examples of such sites are Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download, which simply don't focus on "free as in freedom", and still can be used as good free software directories.
