"I've been silent for a long time. Life is funny - one minute you're trucking along, advocating Free Software, and the next you're being pulled in 4 different directions at once. Maybe I've been absent from running my site, but I'm still advocating Free Software. Just this past weekend I helped a lady whose previous vendor left her high and dry with her non-free software licenses.

World March for Peace and Nonviolence - Richard Stallman
« When businesses have special influence on politics it means that the democracy is sick. The purpose of democracy is to make sure that the rich do not have influence proportional to their wealth. And if those who have more have more influence than I do, that means that the democracy is dying. Laws created this way have no moral authority, but only the capacity to do harm. »

Plug-in architecture on the way for the GCC
"When Richard Stallman began writing Bison in 1983, he was only trying to build the bits of an operating system he would need to write an operating system. But that recursive goal was no stranger than the recursive name he would create for the software he would eventually create: GNU is Not Unix (GNU).

Anybody up to writing good directory software?
Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David JonathanFrom the very start, directories have served a very useful purpose on the Internet. (One I find useful for example is Free Web Directory). News sites can also be considered directories: they index and categorize news stories! What about categorizing software? In the open source world you get Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat; there are still, believe it or not, shareware and freeware directories like FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and Freeware Downloads (although you need to be careful, as they are not like their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).
Is better education the key to finding better software?
Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward RusselAbout Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software?, it's clear that the topic of software directories is very hot. Most of what you find on Google, however, are not pointing to free and open soruce software -- or worse, they mix the two. Examples of such sites are Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download, which simply don't focus on "free as in freedom", and still can be used as good free software directories.
