«...Much of the communication on the Internet happens between computers according to standards that define common languages. If we are going to live in a free world using free software, our software must be allowed to speak these languages.

Installing and configuring davfs2
One of the cool things about today Internet is how we can use several computers in different locations as if we were our single home computer (...) The solution I recently found was to create a free account at hasfiles.com. They give you 100Mb for free and let you access those files via webdav. Using davfs2, I can mount it as a partition on my system.

Digital “Restrictions” Management
"I had the good fortune of attending a lecture by Free Software Foundation President and Founder, Richard Stallman. Stallman often makes distinctions between free in the monetary sense and free in the civil rights sense. His talk focused on freedom in a civil rights sense. While his focus was on software, the most important parts of his talk for me were his statements on art..."

The semantic web as an operating system: with users and permissions!
In the near future, the semantic web data will be precisely tagged and thus a whole lot easier to find. This will further spur the trend of the web and global society becoming tight networks that are increasingly interdependent and transparent. Do we have to sacrifice anonymity on the web in order to retain trust for collaboration?

The Law of the Commons - March 13, 2009 at Seattle University
"In 2008, nations worldwide plundered their common wealth in an effort to bail out the prevailing economic order. It is a stark reminder that there could be other ways of doing things. It is an opportune time to reexamine the concept of the commons, perhaps as a parallel, if not an alternative to private property oriented social, political and legal systems..."

Contributing to FreeBSD
«As part of the FreeBSD team, I often get asked the same question: “How can I get started as a FreeBSD contributor?” There are usually two reasons why a new contributor feels overwhelmed by the idea of getting started. One of them is that he or she feels that it is difficult to find out exactly how to start contributing to a free software project.

Anybody up to writing good directory software?
Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David JonathanFrom the very start, directories have served a very useful purpose on the Internet. (One I find useful for example is Free Web Directory). News sites can also be considered directories: they index and categorize news stories! What about categorizing software? In the open source world you get Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat; there are still, believe it or not, shareware and freeware directories like FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and Freeware Downloads (although you need to be careful, as they are not like their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).
Is better education the key to finding better software?
Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward RusselAbout Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software?, it's clear that the topic of software directories is very hot. Most of what you find on Google, however, are not pointing to free and open soruce software -- or worse, they mix the two. Examples of such sites are Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download, which simply don't focus on "free as in freedom", and still can be used as good free software directories.
