Performing Backups in Linux
Linux may well be one of the most stable and reliable operating systems out there, but you should still plan for failure. Linux still depends on PC hardware and a steady power supply to be able to function properly. If you are administering Linux servers then this would be a no brainer, but even desktop users should bear it in mind.

Being 39 years of age, Linus Torvalds was born on the 28th of December 1969 in Helsinki, Finland. Though the fact that he graduated the Helsinki University with a Master's degree in computer science may not seem very interesting, you should know that the University's decision to hold a UNIX course during his years there was one of the things that led to the creation of Linux.

ESR: GPL No Longer Needed
Eric S. Raymond is one of the three big figures in open source, together with Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman. The Open Cloud Manifesto in full
This is the text of the Open Cloud Manifesto - it came from someone who disagrees with its sentiments.
Maybe there are shades of the Aperi process here with companies feeling they are being bulldozed into signing something they haven't had a hand in developing?

Dreamlinux 3.5 Review - Desktop Emphasis
I have been distro hopping a lot in recent times. I was testing a lot of the less known Linuxes but never came across one that had no big problem. Of course, Dreamlinux is a fairly popular Linux distro.

DRM is Dead / Long Live DRM: A Call for Transparency in the Emerald City
Reading Prof. Felten's post on "DRM in Retreat" earlier this year might have led one to believe that DRM was getting ready to take a long walk off a short pier wearing concrete shoes. However, the DRM town hall meeting hosted by the Federal Trade Commission this week in Seattle quickly disabused all in attendance of such a notion.

The GPL - Not Fade Away
The beauty of the GPL, as any accomplished software developer will recognize, is that like a piece of elegantly written code, it has a simplicity and transparency all of its own. The license fulfils its demanding objective, of protecting and promoting the principles of free software, without ambiguity or compromise, and as such, is unlikely to fade away.

SCO Objects to $50,586.14 of Novell's Bill of Costs
There are some filings in the SCO v. Novell litigation. SCO is objecting to some of Novell's Bill of Costs, and in the second filing, the court tried to mail something to Jonathan Lee Riches, but the post office evidently couldn't find him. In prison. "Mail returned as undeliverable... unable to forward." Uh oh.

Anybody up to writing good directory software?
Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David JonathanFrom the very start, directories have served a very useful purpose on the Internet. (One I find useful for example is Free Web Directory). News sites can also be considered directories: they index and categorize news stories! What about categorizing software? In the open source world you get Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat; there are still, believe it or not, shareware and freeware directories like FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and Freeware Downloads (although you need to be careful, as they are not like their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).
Is better education the key to finding better software?
Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward RusselAbout Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software?, it's clear that the topic of software directories is very hot. Most of what you find on Google, however, are not pointing to free and open soruce software -- or worse, they mix the two. Examples of such sites are Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download, which simply don't focus on "free as in freedom", and still can be used as good free software directories.
