Dutch "government ISV" adds ODF support

If I understood this Dutch article correctly, the Dutch ISV Centric, which seems to very active in the public sector, is adding ODF support to their applications. Apparently the adoption of ODF by the City of Heerenveen and the City of Groningen had some impact on the decision.

OLPC computers on their way to Birmingham, Alabama

The city will be deploying 15,000 OLPCs to its school system. The OLPCs will be given to all first- through eighth-graders in the city's school system. Some of the computers are expected to be deployed as early as March, with the rest to follow by the beginning of the 2008-9 school year. The first of these small Linux laptops will be used in pilot programs as teachers get up to speed on these computers.

Water researchers dive into EnterpriseDB

South Africa’s nTier has completed a migration of the Water Research Commission’s Compiere ERP system from Oracle to the PostgreSQL-based EnterpriseDB. The commission made the move from the Oracle database to EnterpriseDB because the EnterpriseDB relational database was a more affordable option, nTier said in a statement today.

Touchscreen Desktop Instead of OLPC?

Instead of buying OLPCs or Classmate PCs, one community in Brazil is looking at their own solution to bring technology into their schools (using Linux of course). Their solution is a touchscreen desktop computer, according to CNet. At around $550 and lacking the mobility of the OLPC, it is not, however, clear if this new solution is really better.

Germany upgrades ODF to "recommended"

The new version 4.0 of the document "Standards and Architectures for eGovernment Applications" (SAGA) by the German Ministry of the Interior now recommends ODF for text documents. In SAGA 3.0 ODF was listed as "under observation". Nice to see ODF being upgraded by the SAGA expert group!
