Linux users wanted: non-geeks welcome

http://www.dwasifar.com

There’s an article in Computerworld with an interesting observation. Interestingly, despite Linux’s reputation as a techies’ tool, the survey respondents found that Linux migration was best achieved when it was aimed at non-technical users. This actually fits with my experience.

Microsoft and software morality

http://laserjock.wordpress.com

Martin Owens recently asked the question “Why do you like Microsoft?” It’s a pretty brave thing to ask an free/libre/open source Linux community like Ubuntu. While some have taken up the challenge, it made me pause and think for a minute.

Apple Will Never Replace Darwin With Linux

http://www.kuro5hin.org

Every few months, the Mac web is bombarded with open pleas to Apple, asking--nay, demanding--that Apple swap out the Mach-based kernel that Mac OS X runs on, XNU/Darwin, with Linux. This, of course, ends in with Apple stoically continuing development of XNU/Darwin while fanboys dry their eyes and limp home after their flamewars.

While I'm still chipping away at my AmigaOS 4.1/sam440ep review (try writing a thesis and a large review at the same time), Cloanto released AmigaForever 2009. AmigaForever is a very full-featured AmigaOS emulation tool, packed with various different ROMs and AmigaOS versions (1.3-3.x), as well as tons and tons of included games, software, and demos. Neverland is Your Virtual Linux Playground

http://www.daniweb.com

This post has nothing to do with Michael Jackson, his death, his kids, his Neverland Ranch or anything related to him. It has everything to do with my need for a virtual laboratory where I can test virtual machines, write about them or produce other documentation about them without a significant financial outlay of my own.

Which do you spend more time interacting with: your operating system, or your software? It's possible to get too pedantic with the answer as ultimately everything comes back to the operating system, but really, the answer is your software. You edit a file in a text editor or word processor. You read your email in an email client. You browse the Web in a Web browser.

Ubuntu 9.04 on my 8.04 laptop: Intel video issues sink upgrade

http://www.insidesocal.com

As much as I've railed against quickie distro reviews, I find myself trying a new version of Ubuntu in live CD form and writing just such a piece. I apologize in advance for not running Ubuntu 9.04 longer, but in this evaluation, which has everything to do with the hardware I'm using, I'll explain why this is a wham-bam distro evaluation:
