While the circumstances surrounding that purchase were quite interesting—and indicative of Microsoft's patent strategy—he also described the mission of OIN as a protector of Linux from patent trolls.

Shuttleworth: Will Ubuntu Lead Free Software?

On the surface, Shuttleworth's suggestions are hard to dispute. However, as I analyze his keynote more closely, I wonder whether a couple of his suggestions may not be in the interests of free software, even though he clearly meant them that way. Still others seem to be more in the interests of particular sections of the community than those of free software as a whole.

EU Commission Announces Market Test of Microsoft Suggestions on Browser Choice, Interoperability

New (to me) update notifications in Ubuntu 9.04, plus fixing a 'Distribution Updates' issue

I finally experienced my first "phantom" update notification in Ubuntu 9.04. In previous versions of the system, a little icon on the upper panel would notify me that updates were available. I could either click the icon and open the Update Manager, then do the update. But in this new system (I've been running 9.04 about a week), the icon is gone.
